A very helpful web site is www.townhunter.com. This site is geared toward people that are relocating and would like to compare city data. However, this feature is also great for side-by-side comparison of your community with up to six other communities that are in their database. You can compare such things as cost of living, crime, housing costs, and census information. This great for communities the size of ours (Marshalltown) and other smaller communities that may not be listed in other well-known of living analysis.

Governing magazine is not only a rich resource for the state and local government community, but it also provides a gateway to other useful internet resources. GovLinks provides categorized, frequently updated links to hundreds of websites chosen for special relevance. You can check it out at governing.com/govlinks/glinks.htm.

The Daily Digit presents stats that are useful, illuminating or just plain interesting at governing.com/digit.htm.

Check out this site for free software and useful meeting information http://www.meetingwizard.org. Everything regarding holding a meeting from taking minutes, effective meeting- tips, to scheduling and chairing a meeting. E-mailed invitations will not even be sent with a typo in them! I have not used this software yet but have found the information on meetings useful and plan to give the meeting scheduler a try. A lot of the questions I had about this program are answered below:

To organize a meeting or event, it might seem that it's easy to simply send an email message. But more often than not, you need to know when people are available. For example, if you're inviting six people, you need to wait for six separate responses, manually collate them, and hope you've got a match, then confirm with all the details. If you don't get a match, you have to start all over again. Moreover, there's just too much room for confusion and error in this process.

Outlook Calendar has a scheduling feature but it's based on the sharing of common calendars. The scheduling function is only accessible by users connected to that particular server. Moreover, there are many scheduling features that Outlook doesn't have that include: proposing multiple times, options to automatically confirm available times, and many more. We recommend you use whatever calendaring tool you want: Outloook Calendar, Lotus Notes, Palm, etc., but use MeetingWizard to schedule all of your meetings. A major advantage of MeetingWizard is that it is web-based and always available through a browser and whatever email service you use. It requires no downloads and no I.T. support and you always have access to the latest version.

I hope you enjoy this website as much as I have.

Sharing this benefit with you once again, the "Linking Assistants" is just one of the benefits of belonging to ICCA.

Some of your Chambers and Economic Developments may already use this, but use it as you may.  Your community is able to collect data and have it compared with other cities, whether metro or micro, for cost of living expenses.  I happen to coordinate this data collection in our Burlington/West Burlington office each quarter, and since we are in the third quarter this year and the deadline is coming soon to get information in, this website is fresh in mind.

For a fee, you are able to participate in this quarterly collection, and I believe our chamber and economic development office have benefited from this information.  I have used this information to help decisions on relocation into our community and it has also been used in some ED prospects as well. The site is the ACCRA website at www.coli.org.  Give it a try if you haven't already!  I
