CB railroad relocation project named finalist for national awardSeptember 07, 2017
A rail relocation project in Council Bluffs has been named a finalist for a national transportation award.
The $23 million project -- which was a part of the larger Council Bluffs Interstate System Improvement Program -- is one of 12 projects nationwide that was named as a finalist for the 2017 America's Transportation Awards sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, AAA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Iowa Department of Transportation Director Mark Lowe says railroads form an integral part the road system in Council Bluffs.
"This has been an important project for the state, the DOT, the Council Bluffs area and the railroad industry," said Lowe. "It was surprising to me as I learned about this project is that 25 percent of all trains that go between the eastern and western United States pass through Council Bluffs, Iowa. We have nine railroad main lines of five major railroads converging there."
