• Summer academy prepares students

    It can be hard to understand how someone else feels, especially if you’re 11.

    But 24 children getting ready to start middle school recently spent some time empathizing. They were guided by staff of the University of Northern Iowa Center for Urban Education Leadership Academy, made up of UNI education majors and area high school teachers.

    The students worked in groups with academy teachers, listening to their stories of being chosen last, left out, laughed at or picked on. Then they were asked to step onto a sheet of paper in the middle of the group with the outline of a pair of feet and tell how the situation would make them feel.


    It was one of the leadership activities included in the four-week academy wrapping up this week. The students from Dr. Walter Cunningham School for Excellence and Highland and Lincoln elementary schools were nominated by their fifth-grade teachers to participate in the program.
