West Des Moines, Iowa

The Historic Valley Junction Foundation seeks to restore the façade, first-floor storefront and marquee of the Lyric Theater. Goal: to further emphasize the historic gathering place as an icon of main street.

As the neighborhood’s largest building, the Theatrical Shop is one of West Des Moines’ most recognizable places. This project will kick start its makeover, concentrating on the restoration of the marquee, the first-floor storefront, and the 5th Street brick facade.

American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, in partnership with Main Street America, launched Partners in Preservation: Main Streets. The campaign will award $2 million in American Express preservation grants to historic sites in 25 Main Street districts across the country as decided by public vote.

You can help determine whether your favorite main street site receives the funding at, hosted by National Geographic, the media partner for the campaign.

Main Streets are at the heart of American communities, providing a home to small business and a major draw for tourism. Working to rejuvenate these historic sites can have a strong impact on the community in terms of the local and statewide economy, new jobs and spurring new preservation projects.

The public is invited and encouraged to vote once a day for up to five main street projects through October 31.
